COURSE DESCRIPTION

Originally presented in 2020, this on-demand course features two videos, through which WSAVA International Scientific Achievement Award Winner, Dr. David Twedt, will review step-by-step standards for diagnosing and treating causes of chronic diarrhea. We’ll learn the differences between inflammatory bowel disease, GI lymphoma, and protein-losing enteropathies, understand small bowel vs large bowel diarrhea and their causes, and hear how to prioritize diagnostics and treatment for patients with chronic diarrhea.

Upon viewing each recording and passing a quiz with a score of 70% or better, you’ll earn 2 hours of RACE Approved CE.

VIDEO 1: Those Troublesome Chronic Diarrhea Cases
(1 credit hour)

In this video, we’ll review why chronic diarrhea work-up requires a directed systematic approach, beginning with simple things and then advancing to more involved diagnostics. Common conditions will be discussed, including the role of diet, antibiotics, probiotics and even fecal microbiota transplants (FMT). Case examples will be used to highlight the disorders.

What You’ll Learn:

  • How to approach chronic diarrhea and how to systematically work up the patient
  • When to test B12 and folate concentrations and what abnormalities may suggest
  • The importance of dietary aspects in GI disease and suggested diets
  • What GI dysbiosis is and how it is managed

Estimated time to complete: 55 minutes

VIDEO 2: IBD, GI Lymphoma, and PLE
(1 credit hour)

In this video, we’ll learn that chronic diarrhea that fails to respond to simple therapies is often associated with idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), small cell lymphoma, or protein losing enteropathy (PLE). This session will cover the specific diagnostic problems in differentiating IBD from small cell lymphoma in cats and how to diagnose and treat protein losing enteropathies in dogs. Case examples will be used to highlight the disorders.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Current thoughts on management and expected prognosis of small cell lymphoma, a very common but difficult to diagnose GI condition
  • How to diagnose IBD, the differentials for IBD, and how to manage idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease using anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive therapies
  • How PLE develops, how calcium metabolism can be affected, and the role of low-fat diets management of PLE

Estimated time to complete: 65 minutes
