COURSE DESCRIPTION

Originally presented in 2020, this on-demand course features two videos, through which WSAVA International Scientific Achievement Award Winner, Dr. David Twedt, will review step-by-step standards for diagnosing and treating causes of chronic vomiting and regurgitation. We’ll practice differentiating reflux and regurgitation from vomiting, learn the causes of esophagitis and esophageal motility disorders, and hear how to prioritize a differential list for patients with chronic vomiting.

Upon viewing each recording and passing a quiz with a score of 70% or better, you’ll earn 3 hours of RACE Approved CE.

VIDEO 1: Esophageal Disease, the Often Forgotten Organ
(1.5 credit hours)

In this video, an overview of disorders of the esophagus will be presented, including reflux esophagitis, esophagitis, esophageal motility disorders, and management of esophageal foreign bodies. Case examples will be used to highlight the disorders.

What You’ll Learn:

  • The signalment, signs, and diagnostic evaluation of esophageal disease in the dog and cat
  • How best to diagnose, treat and prevent reflux esophagitis – a very common condition
  • How to manage esophageal stricture formation
  • Disorders causing altered esophageal motility and the diagnostics involved for the many of these disease conditions
  • Less common disorders of the esophagus, including esophageal foreign bodies and various tricks in their removal

VIDEO 2: Chronic Vomiting in the Dog and Cat
(1.5 credit hours)

Chronic vomiting is a common GI complaint. This session will cover the basic management of the vomiting patient from simple approaches for many common conditions to those resulting in complex diagnostics for less common disorders. An overview of antiemetic therapy will also be presented. Case examples will be used to highlight the disorders.

What You’ll Learn:

  • How to develop a differential list, formulate a diagnostic plan and appropriate treatment options for vomiting pets
  • Understand various antiemetics, their mechanism of action, and when they should be used
  • The role of diet, antacids, prokinetics and antibiotics in the management of patients with gastric disease

MEET THE SPEAKER

David Twedt

DVM, DACVIM 

Dr. David C. Twedt graduated from Iowa State University and entered an internship and medicine residency in gastroenterology at The Animal Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Twedt then joined the staff of the Animal Medical Center and was also a research associate at the Liver Research Center of Albert Einstein Medical School. Dr. Twedt is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences at Colorado State University in small animal internal medicine. He is also currently the Associate Director of the Center for Global Education in Medicine and Surgery (GEMS) focused on endoscopic education at CSU.
Dr. Twedt is past President of the ACVIM and Comparative Gastroenterology Society. Publication and research interests include liver disease, gastrointestinal disease and endoscopy. He has also been the recipient of a number of teaching and research awards. He is also the co-editor of the textbook Current Veterinary Therapy 14 and 15 editions.
