In this 4-part video series, we’ll review ocular diseases of every kind; study species-specific differences in ocular disease presentations, optimize your ophthalmic pharmacy, and see how eyes can be a window to the rest of the body.
Dr. Fritz will review methods of ophthalmic examination and which tools work best in your clinical setting, as well as common ocular emergencies. Then, feel more confident managing eye problems after hearing Dr. Hauessler’s tips and tricks for treating corneal ulcers, keratitis, epiphora, glaucoma, uveitis, retinal detachment, and more.

Part One
Examinations and Inventory
In this 3-video section, viewers will hear which ophthalmic instruments are essential for general practice, learn which ten medications are considered ophthalmic must-haves for every clinic, and apply some of those principles with a lesson on ocular emergencies.

Part Two
The Feline Eye
In Part 2, we’ll discuss a variety of feline ophthalmic diseases, such as adnexal disease, feline herpes virus, glaucoma, retinal detachment, uveitis, etc. Viewers will learn proper recognition of the disease and the various diagnostic, medical, and surgical options.

Part Three
Structural and Systemic Disease
In the third segment, viewers will learn to readily identify congenital and developmental abnormalities of the lens and uvea that are infrequently discussed. Lectures will also focus on various normal and abnormal appearances of the tapetum, non-tapetum, and optic nerve disease. Finally, viewers will zoom out and identify ocular involvement in systemic disease processes.

Part Four
Epiphora, Ulcers, and Glaucoma
Viewers will better understand causes and treatments of epiphora, as well as important client communication tips. Then viewers will focus on correctly diagnosing various ulcers in canines. Underlying causes are discussed in addition to common pitfalls, treatment options, and when to refer to an ophthalmologist. Finally, viewers will be guided through proper intraocular pressure testing, the differences between primary and secondary glaucoma, and various ways to recognize different diseases and outcomes. The practitioner will learn up-to-date treatment options and be able to better discuss this series of diseases with their clientele.

Kevin Fritz
DVM, DACVO
Dr. Kevin Fritz is a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science and Biology from the University of Kentucky (Summa Cum Laude) and then his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine (Valedictorian). Afterward, he completed a small animal medicine and surgery internship at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine and an ophthalmology residency program at Eye Care for Animals in Tustin, CA. Dr. Fritz became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists in 2013. He spent many years practicing in southern California before joining South Texas Veterinary Ophthalmology in 2021.
In addition to practicing medicine, Dr. Fritz also enjoys research and has participated in 16 different ophthalmic studies to date including publications in the distinguished journal of Veterinary Ophthalmology. Dr. Fritz lends his time as a teacher for many accredited continuing education lectures on various ophthalmology topics to veterinarians and residents across the county. Furthermore, Dr. Fritz gives back to his veterinary community, serving on the Ophthalmology Colleges’ (ABVO) residency committee as a member and co-chair.
DJ Haeussler Jr
BS, MS, DVM, DACVO
Dr. DJ Haeussler grew up in the Cincinnati area. He finished his undergraduate work at The Ohio State University and then received his doctorate in 2006. He then went to New Jersey where he finished two internships at Garden State Veterinary Specialists and then returned to his alma mater, The Ohio State University to complete his residency. While at Ohio State University for his residency, he completed a Master of Science degree and earned the top award for professional student research at Ohio State as well as the top resident award for professional research at the annual American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) in 2010. Dr. DJ Haeussler has been published in Veterinary Ophthalmology, Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Clinician’s Brief, and others. His publications have been referenced in the gold standard textbook, Veterinary Ophthalmology. Dr. Haeussler has also published a photographic atlas to help better help veterinarians and veterinary technicians identify ophthalmic disease in dogs and is entitled Recognition of Canine Ocular Disease: A Photo Atlas, Volume 1. Dr. Haeussler’s photographs of ophthalmic disease are found in textbooks and lectures worldwide. Dr. Haeussler has also served as a part-time ophthalmology consultant and clinician at Garden State Veterinary Specialists, in Tinton Falls, New Jersey. Dr. Haeussler is a board certified diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO). Dr. Haeussler has also served on the ACVO Public Relations committee as the committee chair, president of the Cincinnati Veterinary Medical Association, and is a member of the Cincinnati Veterinary Medical Association Board of Trustees.
Dr. Haeussler’s interests are providing exceptional ophthalmic care to prolong vision and comfort for your pet. He is very interested in cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation as well as various surgical methods of corneal repair. He enjoys mentoring young doctors and enjoys lecturing at the local, state, and international levels. Dr. DJ Haeussler is married to Dr. Jayme Haeussler, a veterinarian in the Cincinnati area. Outside of his career, he is an avid sports fan and enjoys following the Cincinnati Reds, the Cincinnati Bengals, and the Ohio State Buckeyes. He loves to spend time with his wife, Jayme, their two sons, Trey and Dane, and their dog, Charlotte Pickles. Dr. Haeussler’s other hobbies include scuba diving, photography (even underwater!), and anything to do with veterinary ophthalmology.
