With the help of two certified hospice care experts, we’ll adapt pain management plans for senior pets, including those with co-morbidities. Talk through medical decision-making for pets with terminal or chronic GI diseases, urinary tract diseases, and intracranial diseases and share tools to guide clients through difficult end-of-life decisions with grace and confidence. Lastly, we’ll cover protocols and compassionate tips for peaceful euthanasias.

Dr. Erica Sandberg, DVM, CHPV, CPEV

Erica Sandberg

DVM, CHPV, CPEV

Erica Sandberg, DVM, CHPV, CPEV is a veterinarian for BluePearl Pet Hospice in Houston, Texas. As a native Houstonian, she is dedicated to providing excellent pain management, palliative and hospice care, and compassionate euthanasia services for the Houston area. Dr. Sandberg graduated cum laude from Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2011, and upon graduation was granted the Gentle Doctor Award. After working in small animal general practice in Houston for six years, she shifted her focus to in-home hospice and euthanasia services. In 2021, she became a Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Veterinarian through The International Association for Animal Hospice and Palliative Care. Dr. Sandberg is passionate about mentoring and teaching veterinary students and veterinarians in the ways that palliative medicine has changed the lives of her patients and their families. Dr. Sandberg enjoys time outside of work reading, exercising, creating art and relaxing with her family, both two-legged and four-legged.

Dr. Julia Spade, DVM, CVMA, CHPV, CPEV

Dr. Julia Spade is the Medical Director at BluePearl Pet Hospice, where she leads with compassion and clinical excellence in end-of-life veterinary care. She earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Kansas State University, graduating Cum Laude in 2011. Following graduation, she completed a rotating internship at VCA Specialty Hospitals near Chicago, Illinois, where she was honored as “Intern of the Year.”

Dr. Spade spent four years practicing emergency medicine, during which she began her journey into hospice and palliative care. In 2016, she transitioned to full-time work in this field, dedicating her career to supporting pets and their families through the final stages of life. She holds certifications in Veterinary Medical Acupuncture through CuraCore and in Hospice and Palliative Care through the International Association of Animal Hospice and Palliative Care (IAAHPC).

Her professional passions include advanced pain management, palliative care, and creating dignified, meaningful end-of-life experiences for families. Dr. Spade is also deeply committed to education, mentoring new veterinarians in communication, patient care, and pain management strategies.

Outside of work, she enjoys exercising, drinking wine on the patio, reading, and spending time with her two- and four-legged children—Scarlett, Wesley, Gimli, and Dizzy. She also loves traveling with her husband, Geoff.

Dr. Stephanie Brantley, DVM

Dr. Brantley joined IDEXX as Professional Services Veterinarian for the South Texas Region in 2022. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Colorado-Boulder and after a 4 year hiatus she earned credits toward a Bachelor of Science degree from Arizona State University. She travelled across the border to Canada for her veterinary training and received her DVM degree from the Atlantic Veterinary College, University of Prince Edward Island. Post-graduation, she completed a rotating internship at Michigan Veterinary Specialists which provided a strong foundation to all aspects of small animal medicine and surgery.

With 19 years of clinical experience under her belt, Dr. Brantley has demonstrated significant agility in her ability to succeed in diverse and challenging work environments. These have included feline-only practice, general practice, relief veterinary services, and emergency medicine. Most recently, Dr. Brantley held contract veterinary positions for the U.S. Department of Defense and U.S. Department of State taking care of service dogs in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Stephanie grew up in Houston, TX, and after several years away, she has returned to the area. She has a passion for world travel and is an avid baseball fan. She currently resides in Kingwood, TX, with her beautiful 13 year old cat, Ivy.
